GLYCANAGE INSIGHT

What GlycanAge Measures and Why It Matters

IgG glycosylation as a mirror of immune ageing

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) — the most abundant antibody in your blood — is coated in complex sugar structures called glycans. The pattern of these glycans shifts measurably with age, lifestyle, inflammation, and disease.

Specifically, the ratio of pro-inflammatory glycoforms (low galactosylation, absent sialylation) to anti-inflammatory glycoforms (high galactosylation, sialylated) is what GlycanAge measures. This ratio reflects the current inflammatory tone of your immune system with a precision that chronological age cannot approach.

Backed by over 30 years of research and validated across multiple large cohort studies, the GlycanAge index correlates significantly with BMI, CRP, lung function (FEV1), systolic blood pressure, and — critically — responds to lifestyle intervention. Your biological age, unlike your chronological age, can move in both directions.

My clinical position on GlycanAge

A valuable biomarker — interpreted honestly

GlycanAge is one of the best-validated biomarkers of biological immune ageing currently available. Its association with inflammatory markers and metabolic parameters is robust and replicated across multiple independent cohorts.

However, a number on its own is not a clinical strategy. A GlycanAge of 52 at chronological age 45 tells you that your immune system is ageing faster than expected — but it does not tell you why, which interventions will move it most efficiently for your specific biology, or how to prioritise changes within the constraints of your life. That is what a clinical consultation provides.

I present GlycanAge to my patients not as a verdict, but as a motivating, actionable data point — one that gives us a measurable starting position and a way to track whether the strategy we build together is working.

CLINICAL INTERPRETATION

What the Data Reveals and What I Do With It

Immune inflammatory tone

The glycan ratio reflects the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory IgG — a direct readout of your immune system's current inflammatory state, independent of acute illness.

Biological age gap

The difference between your GlycanAge and your chronological age quantifies immune ageing acceleration or deceleration - and gives us a measurable target for intervention.

Response to intervention

Unlike genetic tests, GlycanAge changes with lifestyle. Repeating it 12 months after implementing a strategy gives us objective evidence of whether that strategy is working.

01

Identify the primary drivers in your case

Elevated biological age has different upstream causes in different people — chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, poor glycan turnover, dietary pattern. I identify which is most likely driving your result.

02

Rank interventions by expected biological impact

Not all lifestyle changes move GlycanAge equally. I prioritise the interventions with the strongest evidence for shifting glycan balance — specific to your metabolic and immune context.

03

Integrate with your full clinical picture

GlycanAge alone is one layer. I contextualise it within your existing blood markers, immune history, metabolic status, and — if combined with the nutrigenetics consultation — your genomic predispositions.

04

Build a monitoring framework

I recommend a retesting schedule and complementary markers to track — so your biological age trajectory becomes a data series, not a one-time curiosity.

A number without a clinical framework is just a number. My role is to turn your GlycanAge score into a strategy — specific to your biology, your history, and your goals.

CONSULTATION PROCESS

How Your Analysis Works

01

Book & receive your test kit

After booking, your GlycanAge kit is dispatched to your address. A simple blood spot collection, similar to a glucose monitoring prick. Completed at home in under 5 minutes and returned by post.

02

Laboratory analysis of 29 IgG glycan structures

Your sample is processed by the GlycanAge certified laboratory. The analysis measures 29 distinct glycan structures, grouped into functional indexes, and combined into your final GlycanAge score. Results typically return within 3–4 weeks.

03

Clinical interpretation consultation - 60 minutes

I review your full glycan profile before we meet. During the consultation, we discuss what your score means in the context of your health history, inflammatory markers, lifestyle, and goals. We leave the session with a clear, ranked intervention strategy.

04

Written strategy report

Delivered within 5 working days - covering your score interpretation, the primary biological drivers identified, prioritised lifestyle and nutritional interventions, and a recommended retesting schedule. Shareable with your GP or other specialists.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

I typically recommend retesting every 12 months after implementing the strategy. This gives sufficient time for lifestyle changes to be reflected in the glycan profile, and provides a meaningful signal about whether the interventions are working. Earlier retesting (6 months) may be appropriate when making significant dietary or supplementation changes.
Yes and this is what makes GlycanAge clinically valuable. Unlike genetic tests, biological age measured by glycan profiling is responsive to lifestyle intervention. Published studies show meaningful GlycanAge improvement in response to dietary change, exercise, weight management, and targeted supplementation. The extent of improvement varies by individual and baseline, which is why clinical interpretation matters.
The laboratory test is the same. What is different is what happens after the number arrives. Ordering directly from GlycanAge gives you a score and generic lifestyle guidance. This consultation gives you a clinical interpretation — contextualised within your health history, integrated with your other markers, and translated into a specific, prioritised, and medically informed strategy.
Yes. The test kit is dispatched across Europe. The consultation is available via secure video call. The written report is delivered digitally. Patients from across Europe regularly consult remotely.
CRP reflects acute-phase inflammation and fluctuates significantly with short-term events, illness, exercise, stress. GlycanAge reflects the longer-term structural inflammatory state of your immune system, accumulated over months and years. It is less sensitive to day-to-day noise, and more informative about your chronic inflammatory baseline and ageing trajectory.
